We find another cottage which is a surprise to me. I would expect the land around here to be quite deserted. Still, it helps our investigation. Things clearly originated here. There is a pentagram drawn in the snow, with Scandinavian runes around it. Droplets of dark blood can be seen at each tip of the star. Red-orange fire is burning bright in the middle of it although all firewood is cinders by now.
There are also tracks. Some of them lead back to the lake, no doubt towards the cottage we just left. One set of tracks leads into the forest.
“These,” Hedgehog says confidently. “Whoever left them was not human.”
The tracks look perfectly human to me: big winter boots, probably belonging to a male.
“If you say so,” I concede.
The forest that swallowed the footprints looks tall and ominous, a wall of darkness against the moonlit hills. It may not be wise to venture there with only the sorcerer for support.
“What are you waiting for?” Hedgehog says, impatient. “Let’s follow them.”
“As much as I’m used to you rushing into danger headlong,” I say coolly, “you should remember that I’m not that reckless. It’s night and it’s winter. Before charging into the forest in pursuit of a monster, I would like some guarantees that I’ll come back.”
This makes the sorcerer grunt.
“Come on,” he pleads in an exasperated voice.
“And the best guarantee,” I press on, relentless, “is calling for reinforcements.”
( What are my options? )
“No need to go back,” I say. “Let’s go after Fenrir.”
“FINALLY,” Hedgehog grins.
(To be continued...)
